Gas cooking appliances are most popular in household use because of its clean and efficient nature in cooking. Although gas cooktops are economical, a number of safety precautions should be followed while handling them.
Be careful of monoxide poisoning
Gas appliances such as ovens, stove tops etc. can be a source of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be a serious health hazard. Depending on manufacturer’s requirements, the stove may need to be vented.
While cooking
Safety precautions should be followed while cooking also. Make sure the flame beneath the cooking pot does not extend past the sides of the pot. Don’t leave cooking unattended; if you are cooking with oils and the contents of the pot overflow a fire start or the gas flame could put out the flames leaving the gas on. Either of these could cause fire or explosions if gas is leaking for an extended time.
Avoid fire hazards
Flammable materials should not be placed near gas cooktops. Kitchen appliances such as plastic boxes, dishes, kitchen towels and the like should not be kept near burners – this will eliminate the risk of fire hazards. Make sure you turned off the gas after cooking is done.
Gas leaks
A rotten egg smell is added to both LPG and natural gas, which are odourless in their purest state, in order to detect gas leaks via smell. If your gas cooking appliance has a gas leak, you will be able to smell it due to the rotten egg smell. If safe to do so you should follow the procedure below before calling a professional gas plumber.
- Turn the gas supply off at your gas meter or at the LPG cylinder
- Shut down all gas and electrical appliances including any gas pilot lights
- Open all doors and windows for ventilation if it is safe to do so
- Extinguish all naked flames and do not smoke
If it is unsafe to do the above, immediately evacuate the area and call the fire department.
